This chapter has been published in a book serving as a festschrift honoring the work of public relations scholars James E. Grunig and Larissa A. Grunig. It discusses some problems of public relations historiography: the beginning of public relations, the social, organizational and other criteria related to this beginning and the subsequent development of public relations. This is still a matter of considerable debate and different logics and approaches exist concerning these problems. Relating to these problems, two different types of public relations historiography may be distinguished: the fact- and event-based approach and the model and theory-based approach. A functional-integrative stratification model is developed. Stratification models are well known in biology, psychology and geography, but until now they have been unknown in communication and public relations research.
